Lonely Canadians look for human connection with their baristas

You know that guy ahead of you in the coffee line that starts telling the barista about his self-published novel when you just want to order your damn half-sweet, no foam latte?

Yeah, there’s more of him.

An online survey conducted by Starbucks Canada found that nearly 40 per cent of Canadians continue talking with their barista placing their order, during the time span when the most polite thing to do is move on and patiently wait to see how poorly your name was spelled.

Another 20 per cent say “they’ve shared personal stories with their local barista.” Just over a quarter, 26 per cent, went so far as to say they consider their local barista a “friend” — which is either very sweet or very sad depending on how much cynicism lurks in your heart.

Among their findings is that Canadians are more enthused about Starbucks’ blonde roast as Americans, drinking twice as much of it per capita than our southern neighbours. If you prefer a darker brew, Tim Hortons is offering a small cup of their dark roast coffee for $1 until Monday.

The results were pulled from an online survey of 1,000 Canadians for National Coffee Day on Sept. 29, a day when coffee sellers offer discounts and consumption data while the rest of us carry on as usual.

Check out the infographic for more of the survey’s findings.
